Entry Kellergasse Prellenkirchen - Kellerviertel Edelstal

The start and end point of the hike is one of the most beautiful Kellergassen in the region, located between Edelstal and Prellenkirchen. The lovingly maintained cellars house not only wine taverns but also a small museum about viticulture in the region.

At the beginning, the path goes through the shady alley between the romantic cellar houses eastwards, to the edge of the first vineyards. Shortly after, you reach the main road, from which the path turns left and leads up the gentle vineyard slopes. The narrow asphalt road runs exactly on the border between Lower Austria in the southwest and Burgenland in the northeast.

With every meter, the view widens across the flat landscape of Burgenland and the impressive wind farms in front of Lake Neusiedl.

At the highest point of the country road, you can take a short break at a shady rest area and enjoy the view over Edelstal.

To reach the Edelstal Kellerviertel, the path follows the forest edge down along the border of the former "Tiergarten." It was built in the mid-18th century by the Esterházy family as a fenced game preserve. The remains of the wall can still be found in some places.

Past a small wayside shrine, you reach the Kellerviertel after a few minutes. The wildly scattered cellars are a special feature, especially compared to the usually linear arranged Kellergassen. They form a labyrinth where many photo spots can be discovered.

    Kellerviertel - Spitzerberg

Past the small chapel, the country road leads along the edge of the village and between the fields up the sunny mountainside in the northwest. You are always accompanied by the view of the village of Edelstal and the Tiergarten forest at the foot of the Spitzerberg.

The country road finally ends at the edge of the forest and turns into a forest path that immediately turns left. At another crossing, located at a meadow corner, keep going straight. Through the dense deciduous forest, the hike gently ascends, while the almost perfectly straight forest road borders the northwest side of the Tiergarten. On the left side, you can repeatedly glimpse the remains of the princely garden.

    View at Spitzerberg

At the ridge of the Spitzerberg, the forest opens finally and yields to the dry grassland of the nature reserve. The clear view to the south (southwest) offers a panorama over the municipality of Prellenkirchen and the wind turbines, which are among the first installations in Lower Austria. In good weather, not only Lake Neusiedl and the Leithagebirge are close enough to touch, but also the Schneeberg and the foothills of the Alps are visible.

    Spitzerberg - Kellergasse

Following the dry grassland, the route bends southward without taking your eyes off the panorama. After a short, steeper descent, you reach an asphalted country road that runs level between the sunny vineyards. At the next crossing, you can take a break among the vines with a view of Prellenkirchen.

The last stretch of the country road runs through an impressively deep hollow way, covered by mighty deciduous trees, and ends directly at the starting point of the hike in the Prellenkirchen Kellergasse.
